I was reading a fascinating article in The Economist the other day on how animals perceive time. The article was about research into critical flicker fusion frequency (CFF), a fancy name for how fast an animal eyes can refresh an image and thereby process information. Humans refresh their eyes at roughly 60 hertz, or 60 times a second. Dogs refresh at 80 hertz, which is why dogs don like television to them it looks like a series of still photographs, not moving pictures. Which brings us to the fly. If you ever tried to kill a fly with a newspaper you probably been annoyed (and surprised) at how fast the fly moves to avoid the attack. The reason is, as researchers discovered, that flies have a CFF of 250 hertz. This means flies see incoming newspapers as slow moving objects that are easily avoided. A lot! It is clear from such studies that, in the natural world, a single event is perceived quite differently depending on the animal. And since all animals are in what called flow working from their core, what makes them most successful it means that different points of view are literally and biologically part of life. Which brings me to you. Living in flow, from your core, means you are living as nature intended. Everything you do is for success. No animal, unless affected by outside forces, does anything that doesn make it 100% successful in what it is trying to accomplish. Think about the common household dog or cat. While an owner might think he or she is the in reality the animal only does what makes it successful in its daily routine. Or to put it another way, the old saying is very true you can take a horse to water but you can make him drink. So how can all these animals with agendas all be successful? After all, they are all experiencing the same life event yet responding very differently. The key is the animal kingdom isn generally susceptible to flow blockages, things that pervert flow one way or another. In the human world friends, family and society create flow blockages that ultimately impede your success. These represent the sole source of the majority of problems you encounter in life. Or to put it another way, these outside forces are telling you to approach the world from a single perspective without understanding what you about. And that why I mentioned the different visual hertz various species have. You take a simple thing like watching television and you assume is having the same experience, the same perception. But, clearly that is not true at all. And this is how your flow works. Your flow, your core, gives you a foundation from which to approach anything in life, even watching television. Yet if you like most people flow blockages hinder your ability to approach life with full success in mind. I used to be this way. I thought I was wrong or it incorrectly when it came to things people accepted as being great. Some examples Plasma televisions hurt my eyes, so I can watch them for more than a minute. I hate lobster, what most people consider God gift to dining. I think Alfred Hitchcock movie Vertigo is awful, yet it considered by many to be the best movie ever made. I thought I was wrong for thinking these things, even to the point of believing there was something wrong with my body (after all, I must have a defect if I can watch plasma televisions). But then I understood my flow, and learned to work from my insides outward. Just like the fly. Or my dog. You can apply this right now to your work and personal life. Knowing what YOU are about is crucial to any career advancement, any hope of true contentment and happiness in your life. You might not fit in with your current company. You might not like your new boss. You might not like working in the office at all. That okay, contrary to what others might tell you. Your success is guaranteed if you follow the humble fly. Friday, that the Houston Rockets are an all out push to land James when free agency opens on July 1, assuming James opts out, as expected. If the Rockets miss out on James, they will turn their full attention to Carmelo Anthony. Chris Bosh is also on the radar. The report on Houston comes a day after Brian Windhorst of ESPN reported that James harbored some that team owner Micky Arison the brakes on spending over the past year. If the Heat violates the luxury tax this season, the team will incur a more punitive penalty because the Heat has violated the luxury tax for the last two seasons and would be considered a repeat offender. Still, keeping LeBron in Miami is job number one for Arison and Heat president Pat Riley. If Arison can convince LeBron team that he committed to spending whatever necessary to keep quality players around James, then he is likely staying with the team he won two championships with. But, Arison and Riley will have to pull off some moves and convince James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh of their master plan going forward to surround them with not only better players, but also better, younger players. If James, Wade, and Bosh can be convinced to take team friendly deals in the short term, the Heat could likely make major moves for a player like Carmelo Anthony or point guard Kyle Lowry. While Lowry wouldn come cheap, he a ready made scorer, facilitator, and is a great defender at the point guard position. The question for the Big Three is which one will be more important this time around, money, or the pursuit of more championships and a legacy like no other in NBA history. "We're not going to have enough money to operate the program for the rest of the (fiscal) year. We'll only operate the program as long as we have money to do so," said Executive Director Larry Morris. Officials estimate the cash on hand will carry Westmoreland County through Feb. 29. The program could also end this spring in Washington County. Fayette might dramatically scale back its program. Last year, Westmoreland County received $4.7 million for the program, which on average provides more than 21,000 free rides a month. The state allocated $4 million this year for Westmoreland's program. Last month, county commissioners gave the state Department of Public Welfare official notice that the county will suspend the medical transportation program when it runs out of money. State officials said it is unlikely any 11th hour reprieve will develop. "Our budget is set on July 1. We don't have any additional funding we can provide," said Anne Bale, spokeswoman for the welfare department. "It's an extremely difficult budget year. There's just not any money." Changes to reduce costs were implemented earlier this year by the county, requiring that riders be taken to one of the two closest medical facilities to their homes. Participants were asked to give more notice of upcoming trips to better coordinate rides and enable groups of people to be taken by one vehicle. Additional savings could be experienced through a legislative change approved this week and expected to be signed into law next week by Gov. Tom Corbett. That change will require methadone clients who use the program to receive treatment at the nearest clinic. Officials anticipate that change will save $1.8 million annually throughout the state. A state audit revealed that the state paid $32.5 million during the 2009 10 fiscal year to transport methadone clients to clinics. Two years earlier, the cost was $25 million. "We're doing all we can to save as much as we can today. As we go forward, the more we can save, the longer we can operate the program. But we don't see any of these changes saving enough to continue to operate the program in the time we have," Morris said. Westmoreland is not alone in its struggle to keep the program on the road. Sheila Gombita, executive director of Washington Rides, which operates the program in Washington County, said that its medical transportation program is facing a $350,000 shortfall and will have to suspend operations sometime between April 15 and May 15. That program provides about 7,500 free rides every month. Fayette Area Coordinated Transportation also faces a $300,000 deficit as a result of the state spending cuts, according to Executive Director Lori Groover Smith.
