John Crockett is the Washoe County Library System Internet services librarian. He posing here last month at the downtown Reno branch. (Marilyn Newton/RGJ) Nearly everyone 94 percent of Americans, anyway think public libraries improve the quality of life in their communities, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey. A year ago, he knew absolutely nothing about computers. He didn't have any money to take community college computer classes, but the downtown library offers them for free. "It's been the greatest thing for me," Feeney said. "I've been going every Wednesday; I was always learning. If a computer was available, they would let me on." In addition to finding help filling out various government forms, he now volunteers at the library. "The library is giving me a purpose," he said. "I'm needed again." But one thing Feeney finds funny is that when many people consider the library, they think "books," but books make up only about 15 percent of its offerings. A fair amount of the libraries' other offerings strengthen the overall community through free legal, financial and tax classes; job search assistance; wireless Internet access 24/7, even for those sitting outside the building; meeting rooms; and children's literacy programs. Despite all this, its funding could take a huge hit in 10 years when a dedicated revenue stream ends. More on that in a minute. Breadth of programs "We've been surprised at how many people don't know we have e books and digital audiobooks that they can download," said Arnie Maurins, Washoe County Library System director. The libraries also offer CDs and DVDs with the latest music, TV shows, movies and video games. "And they're surprised at the breadth of programs," he said. "It's not just storytimes. We have musical programs, performing groups, cultural things, lectures, art exhibits in several branches. We host tax help and have classes on managing your finances." Several branches have meeting rooms with doors that go outside, and people such as citizen advisory boards and student groups can use them after library hours and lock up when they're done. One valuable resource the libraries also offer is simply a safe space. "There are fewer and fewer places where people can just go and hang out and read or write," Maurins said. "It's a neutral space, everyone's welcome, and you're not required to buy anything to stay. I think that serves an important purpose." School, job, Senior help Being a neutral space is also something John Crockett finds important. He's in charge of Internet services for the library system. "There was a similar Pew study (to the one mentioned above) that showed that in addition to valuing libraries, they trust libraries," Crockett said. "You're getting information and entertainment, but it's a lot more independent than you get anywhere else. On a Google search engine, it recognizes where you're coming from and it's going to give you search results it thinks you want along with the advertisements. The information at the library is independent." The library's I internet services provide a bedrock of support free support for area students and job seekers. "People who don't use the library often are surprised by what we offer," Crockett said. For job seekers, five branches offer resume creation software. And through the library's online portal, they can get live interview prep help and career coaching. Mr Stanley said he has previously rejected a request by local MP Glen Elmes to have a stall inside the markets on the same grounds that the markets had to stay apolitical.Mr Pardon said he was shocked that the NIA would try to drag the markets into this political fray and said he preferred to use rather than vinegar to influence people. He said as former deputy mayor, he still supported a stand alone Noosa but he failed to see the point of the NIA to the converted locally when they should be taking the fight down to the George St powerbrokers in Brisbane. Air Jordan 9 Calvin Bailey Tom Kubelus has been a runner since the 1970s, and while the exact mechanics of his pastime have not changed, the crowd has. He and 200 other runners logged 2 miles Thursday night after taking their mark at the Hill Section's Bar Hill for the kickoff of Run Around Scranton. The event was the first of monthly treks planned around several of Scranton's neighborhoods. Mr. Kubelus had already completed a 10 mile run Thursday morning. But he was curious about Thursday night's group run. When he was a child, running wasn't such a huge event. "This sort of thing didn't happen then," Mr. Kubelus said. Mayor Chris Doherty said the runs have three main objectives getting people excited about exercise while at the same time familiarizing them with the neighborhoods and the businesses in them. "We want to show off the city," Mr. Doherty said. Each free run will begin at a local business in a different neighborhood in Scranton on the third Thursday of the month. On Feb. 21, a 2 mile trot will begin at Zaleski's Clubhouse Cafe on Beech Street. There are 11 more runs planned this year. Wendy Wilson, spokeswoman for Geisinger Community Medical Center, which partnered with Scranton Running Co. and the city for the event, said the hospital has hired 400 new employees since Geisinger merged with CMC one year ago. Such an event is the perfect way to fully acclimate them with the city and all of its different neighborhoods. What defines Minooka is different from what defines West Scranton, and both are different from what defines the Hill Section, she said. "There's so much character," Ms. Wilson said. "Every section of town has its own history." Scranton resident Bill Cook, 59, has been an avid runner since the late 1980s, participating in several marathons and two Iron Man competitions. But his enthusiasm for running is matched by his pride in his city, and any event that would promote Scranton is a good one.
