You could use regular paper, but it may we to stiff especially around bends. I purposely used damaged comics as I feel the same way about cutting them up. News paper comics would work, but if you want a particular theme, that could cause a problem. I have not looked into buying similar paper to that used in comics, but I'm sure you can find it somewhere on the web or craft shop. Let me know what you use and how they turn out. It will get cloudy and attract dirt. I've found that polyurethane makes a great top coat. It's durable, flexible and water resistant. Water based is probably best. Oil based is more durable but has a slight yellowish cast. This is fine for wood but probably not great for comics or anything with white or light colors. Shoes will get scuffed so several coats of poly over the Mod Podge would probably be a good idea. I just realised I didn't say anything about the steel wool. It can be used to buff the shoes when finished, but I found I didn't need to used it as the surface was pretty smooth when completed. The issue with the glossy comics are the pages are pretty thick, and the gloss may prevent saturation when using the mod podge. I have not tried, so it may work. They would also be more difficult to manipulate around corners and edges. I may try it as an experiment on my next project, an if it works or not, update the Instructable.
