Kentucky won 74 69. (AP Photo/David J. Phillip) INDIANAPOLIS (AP) OK, so maybe they not the quickest learners. Still, the kids at Kentucky figured out Louisville just in time. Aaron Harrison hit a 3 pointer for the go ahead score with 39 seconds left and Julius Randle made a pair of clutch free throws to lift the fantastic freshman of Kentucky to a 74 69 victory over their in state rivals. The eighth seeded Wildcats (27 10) led for a grand total of 65 seconds in this Midwest Regional semifinal. They play Michigan on Sunday for a trip to the Final Four. Few expected a run this deep as this season played out and Kentucky five freshmen starters struggled to play a team game. But they been learning slowly. Trailing by seven with 4 minutes left, things kicked in again. Actually, it was a sophomore, Alex Poythress, who scored five points in a 7 0 run that tied the game at 66 with 2:11 left. Then, it was the Kentucky freshmen who showed all the poise against the defending national champs, led by seniors Russ Smith (23 points) and Luke Hancock (19). Harrison took a pass from Julius Randle and spotted up in the corner for the go ahead shot. Both finished with 15 points, as did yet another freshman starter, Dakari Johnson. On the next possession, Louisville Wayne Blackshear got fouled. The 71 percent career free throw shooter missed the first. Randle came down and made two free throws to put Kentucky ahead by three. Smith missed a tough look at a 3 pointer on the next possession and a few seconds later, the Wildcats were chest bumping and coach John Calipari was pumping his fists to a loud stadium full of blue. This was the ultimate lesson in patience for a team that, for so long, had trouble showing any. Louisville coach Rick Pitino, who fell to 11 1 in Sweet 16 games, produced a matchup zone that the Wildcats had trouble working through. The Cards led by as many as 13 in the first half, yet went to halftime only up three despite holding Kentucky to 33 percent from the floor. Making this win even more impressive for the Wildcats: They played almost the entire game without Willie Cauley Stein, an NBA caliber forward who sprained his left ankle early. And James Young, who also might go pro, fouled out with 5:32 left. That left it to Harrison, his twin brother, Andrew (14 points) and Randle, a lottery pick in waiting who was a monster inside. He had 12 rebounds to go with the 15 points. He had a double double in all three tournament games. Calipari makes no apologies for recruiting the best talent and taking his chances they leave before they really set up shop at Kentucky. That strategy helped him bring the eighth national title back home two years ago. Then, Louisville won it last year. Now, Kentucky is a win away from the program 16th trip to the Final Four.

Leveraged bravado has given way to equity in regret. After we got our first sub prime related market sell off in February, 2007, I wrote a piece titled "Private Equity Prays the Hardest that the Market Has Not Topped Out." I made several claims then, some right, some wrong. For example, I declared that the stock market had indeed topped out, but it took three more false recovery rallies before we finally put in a top eight months later. (It never ceases to amaze me how poorly the stock market can perform as a pricing mechanism). But what brought me back to this old piece was a CNBC Fast Money segment last Thursday featuring legendary bear Doug Kass. In this segment, Kass warned that private equity is the next shoe to drop in our on going financial troubles with contagion effects on college endowments and pension funds. I had been wondering whether my earlier suspicions about private equity had any validity. Last year, I wrote (emphasis new): "In the years since the collapse of 2000 2002, we have witnessed a set of rolling booms, some of which have already been ground back into the dust of bust. The celebrated largesse of private equity is certainly the latest of these booms. It seems as if we cannot go one week without the financial pages heralding the triumphant acquisition of another public company by private money. As we have noted many times, the world is awash in cheap and easy money, and these buy outs are yet another manifestation of the boom in paper. But what is more interesting than the chase after public companies is who is chasing the private equity. The Wall Street Journal reports in "How Labor's Pension Funds Are Playing Private Equity Two Ways" (by Alan Murray) that public pension funds were the largest source of funds for private equity in 2005.22% of all newly raised money. Essentially, "public" funds are being used to convert public companies into private companies. Nice! To the extent that this boom is headed to some kind of bust, we can see the ripple effects could be wider than we might originally expect." I highly recommend watching the Fast Money video and reading Kass's article (links above). One key quote: "Like post 2005 vintage mortgage lending, most private equity deals done over the last two and a half years (estimated at over $900 billion) are now worthless (as are some of the early vintages)." Once the housing market set new lows in its throes late last year and then the stock market crumbled this year, I thought private equity would finally make good plays. My thinking was that private equity would refocus on the business of buying distressed companies at a DISCOUNT and find ways of turning disasters into profit. If this scenario does eventually play out, it seems it will happen only after we suffer through some more financial catastrophes. Women Size Air Yeezy 2 Red October 2014 Kanye West Shoes Our mother's taught us that we should be nice to others because it's the right thing to do; I tried to teach my kids the very same thing. I remember from time to time one of my boys would ask why they should help out their brother, what was in it for them? Well, I was the grown up in the house, so in the most gentle, loving manner I could muster I would calmly explain that what was in it for them was the opportunity to sleep inside the house that night and with any luck the next night as well! I tried hard to be a generous and helpful mom. I wish I had known then what I know now. It turns out that every time we do something kind for someone else, from helping them find their shoes to untying them from the railroad track just before the speeding train arrives, raises our serotonin levels. In short it makes us feel good. Here's where it gets even better. You would probably expect the formerly tied up on the track person to feel pretty good about the new situation. But guess what, you will too! That's right not only are you doing just what your mama told you to do (rest assured, Mom's feeling pretty good at the moment now as well) but your serotonin levels go up just as a result of your doing the right thing. Hot dog, you've got to love that. But wait, it gets even better! This is not just a win/win for both the good deed doer and the good deed recipient, but it turns out that anyone witnessing the event also experiences a rise in serotonin. How cool is that? That explains why I felt so good when I would watch one of my boys help the other to build a snow fort. They thought they were simply doing it to protect their corner of the yard from the opponents on the other side of the yard, and in truth that's what they were doing. But they undoubtedly felt good as a result of the kindness, their brothers felt good and I now realize that this act in full view of the neighbors probably made them smile and feel just a bit better as well. Now the life coach in me realizes that even if I didn't intellectually understand this all those years ago that I probably intuitive understood it and that others probably do as well. But how cool is it that we now actually know intellectually what we felt all along? I've had conversations with other Reiki people about this from another angle. For instance, while I give myself Reiki frequently I most feel the wonderful effects of Reiki when I am offering it to another. That is definite motivation to be sharing Reiki with anyone and everyone who is open to the experience. It just feels good and makes me happy. What to do with this information? Perhaps just knowing it is enough to make you smile and feel good. You might share the info with others and hopefully motivate them to do an extra kindness. In truth I don't care just what the motivation was that made my little boys help one another out from time to time. They did and clearly they got something from the experience as they are all now adults who don't hesitate to assist others cheerfully. I feel better just having that knowledge.
