Senator Richard Shelby, a Republican from Alabama, behind right, watches in Havana, Cuba, on Feb. 24, 2012. senator met with imprisoned American Alan Gross and discussed the man's case in a long sit down with Cuban President Raul Castro, but said Friday that he doesn't expect Gross to be released any time soon. Sen. Patrick Leahy, a Democrat from Vermont, said he saw Gross on Thursday afternoon at a Havana military prison. He and Sen. Richard Shelby, a Republican from Alabama, later met for 2 1/2 hours with Castro and offered to take Gross back to the United States on their plane. "You can imagine how far that went," Leahy said in a phone interview Friday with The Associated Press. He added that "we have a long way to go" to win Gross's release. Judy Gross, whose husband Alan has been in a jail in Cuba for two years, talks about his conviction and the struggle to bring him home. The 62 year old Maryland native is serving a 15 year jail term for spiriting satellite and other communications equipment onto the island while on a USAID funded democracy building program. Cuba considers the programs an attempt to destabilize the government, and Gross was convicted of crimes against the state, not espionage. and Cuba and short circuited any chance of rapprochement since President Barack Obama took office. The Gross family wants Castro to pardon him on humanitarian grounds because his mother and adult daughter both have cancer, a call backed by the Obama administration, which insists Gross is innocent. Leahy said Castro agreed that Gross "was no spy." Gross spoke virtually no Spanish and traveled to Cuba five times under his own name before his arrest in December 2009. The talks with Castro and the senators was the first high level meeting between the Cold War enemies since former President Jimmy Carter dined with Castro during a visit to the island in April 2010. Leahy said the late night meeting was cordial and open. The meeting took place as the Cuban diplomatic mission in Washington announced plans to host what it called the "1st National Encounter" with Cubans living in the United States. The meeting will bring together Cuban Americans "who have respectful links to their country," in order to discuss "the normalization of relations" between Cuba and the exile community in the United States, the statement said. Leahy said Castro brought up the case of five Cuban agents sentenced to long jail terms in the United States, including one who was released last year but has not been allowed to return to Cuba while he serves out three years probation. Leahy said Castro never explicitly linked Gross' fate with that of the agents, who were jailed in 1998, but "he made it very clear that while we may be concerned for Mr. Gross and have humanitarian reasons to be, they are very concerned about the five (agents) and have humanitarian and family reasons too." While the agents' case is largely forgotten in the United States, it remains a cause celebre in Cuba, where the government hails the "Cuban Five" as heroes who were only trying to detect and prevent violent attacks against their country by exile groups. Cuban officials have stopped short of linking the cases, but have said no one should expect the island to free the 62 year old American in a "unilateral gesture." Gross's legal appeals have been exhausted, but his family has asked Castro to consider a pardon on humanitarian grounds. Gross, who was portly when arrested in December 2009, has lost about 100 pounds and is now rail thin. His elderly mother and adult daughter are both battling cancer. Leahy said Gross appeared in reasonably good spirits during the visit, but that he also indicated his two years of detention had taken a toll on his health. "He obviously wants to leave. He feels that his health has been endangered," Leahy said, adding that he snapped several pictures of Gross to bring back to his wife, Judy. Cuban state run media carried images of the meeting between Castro and the senators, though they gave no details of what was discussed. Cuban media said Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez was also present. The senators are part of an American congressional delegation touring Cuba, Haiti and Colombia. The other members of the delegation, all Democrats, were Sens. Christopher Coons of Delaware and Kent Conrad of North Dakota and Reps. Peter Welch of Vermont and Xavier Becerra of California..

Hampered by a hamstring injury he suffered in June in a made for TV event the first NFL "Run to Daylight" challenge Brooks, a running back, has spent the camp rehabilitating. He came back for one practice two weeks ago and reaggravated the hamstring so the Redskins have been cautious in giving him the green light to return. Coach Norv Turner, however, said he'll hold Brooks out of the Thursday night game against the New England Patriots before playing him in the final exhibition game next week against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Turner is eager to have Brooks at full strength because he's supposed to play an Emmitt Smith role as tailback in Turner's offense. Two other ailing starters, center John Gesek (back) and defensive lineman Tim Johnson (hamstring), practiced, but they're not at full strength and won't play Thursday. Defensive lineman Leonard Marshall, recovering from a broken forearm suffered last year, will see action for the first time in New England. He returned to practice last week. The Redskins also waived six players to cut their roster to 74. Only one player waived yesterday, offensive lineman Guy Earle, who was on the practice squad last year, had been with the Redskins in the past. Defensive end Chuck Smith returned to the Atlanta Falcons yesterday after serving a three week suspension for fighting. One of his first moves was to apologize to center Roman Fortin for using his helmet as a weapon against him during one of the fights. Coach June Jones suspended Smith to send a message to the team that he wasn't going to tolerate behavior that former coach Jerry Glanville allowed. Smith seems to have gotten the message. "I asked myself a lot of questions [such as], 'Chuck, just where are you supposed to be?' I sort of [evaluated] my whole existence that way. Composure comes with maturity, and that's something I'm working to achieve. I've seen now that you can blow everything you've worked for with one mistake. I'm man enough to say I was wrong," he said. Bengals' Oliver still recovering The Cincinnati Bengals aren't getting many dividends on the $800,000 signing bonus they paid free agent safety Louis Oliver. Oliver, recovering from a broken foot suffered last November, may miss the first six weeks of the season. He underwent surgery in April and the Bengals thought he'd be ready by July, but he still isn't recovered. Coach Dave Shula, who said Oliver may be placed on the physically unable to perform list, said the Bengals knew it was a risk signing Oliver, but their doctors told them it was likely he'd recover in time to play this year. Cecil takes even bigger cut Chuck Cecil, the Arizona Cardinals safety who took a pay cut from $1.2 million to $350,000 in the off season, took another one yesterday. He's now unemployed after being waived by the Cardinals. Cecil was fined almost $50,000 by the league last year for flagrant hits, and the fines may have affected his hard hitting style of play. Jets' Moore out 8 weeks Wide receiver Rob Moore of the New York Jets broke a wrist in an exhibition game against the Philadelphia Eagles Saturday night and will wear a cast for four to eight weeks. He'll miss the final two exhibition games, but the Jets hope he can play in the season opener Sept. 4 against the Buffalo Bills. Moore and Art Monk, who left the Washington Redskins after declining to take a pay cut, are the only established wide receivers on the team. The only veteran backup is Rob Carpenter, who's been mainly a special teams player for the Jets. Bills take an early break Marv Levy, the coach of the Buffalo Bills who's known for his relaxed approach to training camp, lived up to his reputation yesterday. He decided to close training camp today, two days early. "I think we are better off at home," Levy said. "I feel we can accomplish more, at this stage, back in the city than we can at camp." Levy said the team still had as many training camp practices as last year when it made its fourth straight Super Bowl appearance. Bahr still kicking Matt Bahr played his first regular season NFL game in 1979 against the New England Patriots for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were destined that year to win their fourth Super Bowl. The driver of the motorcycle received what attending police have described as minor injuries. I have been saved many times by just giving my bike a little crack. Or just riding and you can tell when a driver is about to pull out in front of you untill he hears your bike. The driver was probably texting or reading a book. I started remembering the car details and plate numbers that almost kill me on a regular basis when I am on my bike in StJohns. Just go to RNC give them the details and they will investigate the occurance and levy a fine. Another example of vehicle drivers having not paying attention or caring about motorcycle riders. It happens every day someone cuts us off or just comes over in our lane as if we were not there. OPEN YOUR EYES that is what windows and mirrors are for. This person was the lowest of all, to drive off after hitting the bike. I hope the motorcyclists is OK. Garry this one seems to be stupid drivers. I hope the driver that did not stop is found, evnen though he will not get anything for it, at least have his picture on the news so everyone can see his face and know what he did. The part of the shoe that contacts the bottom of your foot is the inner sole. In between that and the outer sole is the middle sole that is usually made of some kind of padding for shock absorption. The part of the shoe that is on top of your foot is called the upper. It may be anything from a few thin straps to totally enclosing the foot. Men's work boots may have a steel toecap inserted. The upper is in many cases split down the centre to allow ease of fit. Laces are mostly used to close this split. Under the laces is a tongue that protects the foot being rubbed by the laces. Some sports shoes have Velcro fastenings. If there is no split there may be elastic inserts in each side. Shoes can be done up in a variety of ways other than laces.
