Layers are a girl's best friend in winter, especially for attending a winter concert where you are likely to be both outside in the cold and inside with heaters running. Create your outfit for the concert by layering your clothing. Try jeans with your favorite t shirt or top with a light to midweight sweater on top of that and a jacket or coat to complete the ensemble. Jeans are good for any type of concert because they can be dressed up or down according to what you pair them with. Choose your shirt or top according to what type of concert you are attending, whether it's a dressy top for a Broadway theatre or a plaid shirt to see your favorite rock band. If it's freezing outside, the layers will help to keep your body warm and when you get inside the venue you can easily remove your jacket and still have a cute outfit that won't be too warm indoors. When attending a concert in the winter, the accessories that you choose to carry with you are important, especially if the concert is either outside or will require you to stand outside for any length of time. Wear a hat. Hats don't have to be frumpy or ruin your hair. You can choose a cute knit cap that complements your outfit. Wear a coordinating scarf and gloves to keep you neck and hands warm and protected. Making these accessories a part of your outfit as another layer enhances your ensemble rather than detracting from it. Take along accessories that you'll be able to and want to wear throughout the concert. Attending a more formal concert event, such as a symphony or opera, requires different attire. If you are attending a formal concert and want to dress up but not be cold, consider a knee length skirt with tights or boots and a dressy sweater, or woolen slacks with a nice blouse and full length coat. Nice, flat boots can be worn with either option, keeping your footwear both warm and functional in the cold temperatures. Wearing lined clothing will help to keep you warm without having to wear lots of layers to a formal concert event. Since most symphonies, operas and other more dressy concerts will have a coat check, you can wear a longer, heavier coat than you would normally wear for a winter concert and not have to worry about keeping up with it while inside for the event. Air Jordan 14 Low Retro Last Shot 2011,We live in an astounding area. There are more things to do around the greater Sacramento area than can be done in one lifetime. Photo courtesy of J. Ferris The pacific ocean is a couple of hours away. The foothills outside of Sacramento, in El Dorado and Placer counties, are home to trails and rivers that can keep you busy forever. They lead to the mighty Sierra. Home to rivers, lakes, wildlife and more outdoor recreation possibilities than can be imagined, the Sierra is a spectacular range of mountains. Anything that you like to do outdoors, in all four seasons, is within reach. No matter how many trips to the great outdoors you make, there's always more. That's just on this side, the western side. From Tahoe to your house, it's an outdoor paradise. There's more though. Because we have so much right in our own back yard, we may not pay too much attention to the other side of the Sierra. The entire eastern side is also within reach, even if it takes a little more planning and longer to get there. A great way to start a trip is to go through Hope Valley on the way. At this time of year, there are beautiful vibrant colors, with still more aspens waiting to enter the color sweepstakes. Travel through Markleeville, then up and over Monitor Pass, down to Highway 395. A right turn at the intersection and you head south. The vista opens up at Bridgeport, then, as the highway descends to Mono Lake, the term "opens up" gathers a brand new meaning. The views are unending, as 395 travels down the wide Owens Valley between two mountain ranges. On the way take the turn onto Lundy Canyon Road. What you will drive into at this time of year is a multi mile cruise through some absolutely vibrant aspen groves, that parallel Mill Creek. At the end of the road there is limited parking. According to the locals, a short hike, through even more aspens, will take you to a couple of waterfalls. The parking lot is less crowded during the week. Weekends, especially at this time of year, tend to get a bit crowded. The next turn on this journey will be Tioga Pass Road, which will take you into Yosemite National Park. The drive up Tioga Pass Road is pretty inspiring. It's also a drive that will make those who are not comfortable with heights a little anxious. All the way up, if you hit it just right, aspens will be in full burst. Drive to the May Lake trail head. This hike, one of many that are available, is a 2.4 mile round trip. It is uphill, but isn't anything strange. About halfway to the lake the views open up. To one side is Cathedral Peak, to the other, Half Dome. All over there are massive bits of granite jutting up, and with a compass and a map you can pick out a few more peaks. May Lake is a mid sized lake, and absolutely gorgeous. Mt. Hoffman rises up on one side. There are plenty of rather nice spots to plop down and have lunch or an extended snack. A little bit more effort, involving walking along a path and up into the rocks on the Mt. Hoffman side, and you are rewarded with two things: a large flat area, and just above it, another smaller flattish area. Both offer remarkable panoramic views of the mountains and valleys you drove through to get to the trail head. You can see May Lake, and not too far away, Tenaya Lake, an alpine lake between Tuolumne Meadows and Yosemite Valley. You drive past it on the way to the May Lake Trail Head. On the way back down Tioga Pass Road, after you leave Yosemite, and are truly pointed down hill, you might notice the aspens in the valley, framed by the very steep walls of this mountain area. Look more closely and there's a road down there. That road is Poole Powerhouse Road. Once again the road parallels a creek, Rush Creek, fed by a waterfall that you probably noticed either on the way up or down Tioga Pass Road. Take it. It is pretty special. Aspens that are as colorful as Hope Valley at its peak line the road. Keep going. You will run out of pavement after a bit, and not too far ahead on the dirt road is Poole Powerhouse, built in the early 1900's. It's a really spectacular spot. The powerhouse and the admin building are typical of the early Southern California Edison and PG Mission Style powerhouses. All of this, surrounded by glowing aspens. It was magical, and well worth it. The eastern side of the Sierra has enough wonderment to keep you busy for a long time. If you've never traveled along 395, and explored what is spread out along the base of the Sierra, you are in for a treat. All of this is to encourage you to wander aimlessly while you are traveling about, and to expand your horizons. The El Dorado National Forest is his back yard. He is a retired teacher. He and his wife hike, snow shoe, cross country ski, kayak, ride mountain bikes and road bikes. They love to wander aimlessly looking for new places and adventures. He writes with enthusiasm about the great outdoors to encourage others to get outside and explore. Charles also contributes to CBS Local, and can be read here.

WAVY Sports Director, Bruce Rader and I enjoyed chatting about the race and handicapping it. Stephanie Harris was doing live shots for FOX 43 and WAVY TV 10 at the same time. This really felt like a big event, instead of just another race. Twenty One Year Old, Caleb Doan was the eventual Winner in 26:39, while Virginia Beach Justin Turner fifteen seconds behind with a strong second. The Ladies field was wide open this time,as Norfolk Megan Dewey was the winner in a swift 33:16. After finishing the race, I was able to wrap it up: Tom Ray, didn get into competitive racing until age 55 but it didn take him long to develop into an age group standout. And almost 20 years later, with a slew of club and state age group records on his resume, he was inducted into the Virginia Peninsula Road Racing Hall of Fame in 2007. Sadly, he passed recently at 78, but left plenty of friends The Run With over 40 Marathons and six Boston Marathons to his credit, Tom will be missed. A packed house said goodbye recently. Our thoughts are with his family To Go Racing! Tuesday Night, the Trailzilla Four Miler sprints through Sandy Bottom Park, then the weekend offers the Puller Memorial Twin Bridge 10K in West Point. Also, for a fast time, check out the Warhill 5K, put on by our friends, the Colonial Road Runners. On the Southside, this weekend is light, but there is the March into Summer Two Mile Walk through Botanical Gardens. It a Non timed event, but a great way to check out the Gardens. One for the Kids, Then I Gone! Even though it was Father Day weekend, kids get the Top billing. The future belongs to our youth, so it was easy to catch Angelo Celesia, the Lead Coach of New Energy, the Tidewater Striders group. With nearly One Hundred kids in Hampton Roads, ages 6 16, it was easy to get him to share with us. Thanks for being a good friend The Run! To Fly! Thanks for all the kind words, emails and comments about this Blog. Feel free to leave a comment or message. Love the Feedback! Share with your friends and enjoy. At Mount Trashmore, the Girls on the Run 5K was captured by Nicole Dewey in a blazing 19:25. Congrats also to our Triathlon friends. The Breezy Point Triathlon had to be postponed because of the lightning and crazy weather from June 5th, but they were rewarded this weekend with the Xterra East Championship Triathlon Sunday in Richmond, while the day before, the Commonwealth Sports Medicine Kids Triathlon was a big success in Glen Allen. We give Triathletes plenty of respect here. As Runners, biking and swimming are cross training on off days. For them, it part of the routine. This past weekend, the action was on the Southside for the OK 5K at Virginia Weslyan. Virginia Beach Tommy Holland broke the tape in 16:05, while young Inessa Corney continues to shine with the Ladies Title in a nice 19:50. In it second year, this looks to be a good race for your future schedules. Speaking of the future, I always remark that we certainly our share of talented runners in this area. Over the weekend, I got to check out the AAU District Qualifier meet at Landstown High School. All I can saw is I was impressed, not only by the amount of athletes, their efforts, and times, but by the sea of families, groups and organizations involved. Track and Field groups from Hampton, Churchland, Virginia Beach, Suffolk, along with so many others produced a great competition for the youth. The Regional Qualifier will be held the weekend of July 1 3 at Hampton High School. Those who excel there will qualify for this year AAU Junior Olympics in New Orleans. Last year, it was held in Norfolk at the Norfolk State University. Congratulations to all on your accomplishments and Luck at the next level! The North Face Endurance 50 Mile Challenge in Washington ran back on June 4 5 and locally, our On the Run Steve Speirs served up another dose of his personal best, logging Fifty miles in 7:34. That Seven and a Half Hours! As fast as he is, he is also well received in the Running community as it seems everyone knows his name. If you see him at the next race, say Running is one of the few sports where you could line up next to an elite runner, or end up afterwards chatting with someone who just set a course record. For those of your that Long we salute you here The Run! Yeah, We Got That! Each post, we seem to be reaching someone new. I hope you share these posts with your Running Friends. I got response from Peninsula standouts, Todd Kessler and Karen Terry, two names we mention here as overall winners. They wanted us to know they appreciated the coverage. Our friends at the WAVY Weather Center made the weekend one to remember. Saturday, the 8K brought out the best as Josphat Boit crossed the line in a blistering 23:10, just a millisecond ahead of fellow Kenyan, Richard Kandie. I watched along Atlantic Avenue they were flying. Masters expert, John Lomogda was a Top Three Masters winner in 27:05 and speediest local in this race. I saw him along the Marathon route the next day cheering on others. Thanks for the out Great memories, too High Five from along the route inside Camp Pendleton from the Military Finest and seein the Boy Scouts handing out water along the way. I made sure I shouted the Boy Scouts Law about being Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, etc. The Children Final Mile brought out ten Elementary School youngsters to break six minutes! Congrats to the following: 11 year olds, Keith Holmes, Fair Oaks Elementary, Madeline Woods, Alanton Elementary, the Top Male and Female, along with 8 year old, Hunter Quigley, Old Donation Center. He was the youngest to break the six minute barrier! The future of Running is very bright, indeed! I found out that Madeline Woods also ran the 8K race. Again, WELL DONE! Sunday, The Half Marathon was another big win for Josphat Boit, this time in 1:05:02. Richard Kandie, a near winner the day before, finished 14th. Local speedster, Ryan Carroll form Portsmouth, gutted out a strong 1:12:38 with Virginia Beach Drew Midland about a minute behind. Wind was the BIG winner Sunday for many runners, especially those in the Marathon. Minnesota was in the house as Chris Erichsen, from St. Paul, MN took the Marathon title in 2:18:24. Michael Wardian, the Northern Virginia long distance standout, finished Third with a solid 2:23:27. On the Ladies side, Kenya Rael Murey held off North Carolina Molly Nunn, winning in 2:46:05. Adding to the local flavor, Chesapeake David Hryvniak was seventh overall, while Jennifer Jelig was among the hometown female standouts. Our WAVY family standouts included Reba Bloom, our Evening News Director, who completed the Half Marathon, while her husband, Kyle rocked the full. Also, Morning show host, Kerri Furey put in a super solid First Marathon effort YAY, Kerri! I completed my eighth Marathon with a personal best and my wife, Christine also became a Marathoner. The WAVY Team was definitely The Run! I was moving through the course, I saw several people, off to the side of the road or stopped. I really wasn thinking too much of it until afterward when I realized the enormity of the race that had just occurred. Several Of The Blog have often reminded me that to take on a challenge such as a Half or Full Marathon, you should try to not think about the distance to travel or how far you gone. Staying focused on the you in was also a phrase I had heard that American Distance standout, Ryan Hall used. For those who didn get the chance to get an opportunity to give your best effort remember, there will be other races. I noticed loud cheering at the finish line regardless of the time they crossed. With Running, I guess there is the fun part! A quick congrats to Virginia Beach Steve Speirs, a Third Place Finisher in the HAT 50K Run at the Susquehanna State Park in Maryland. Not only did he better his already fast time by thirty minutes, but he tore up the challenging 31 mile course in Four hours and Fourteen minutes. You may not know that he also wrote a book, weeks to 100 Pushups which is also available for your Smartphone. That some good Running Core knowledge, right there. With the Spring officially here, Duathlons and Triathlon races are back as well. The Virginia Duathlon is this Sunday at the Chippokes State Park in Surry, VA with a 23 mile bike ride, then 5K run. There also a separate 5k run. Saturday, Mount Trashmore picks up the Running action with the Cerebral Palsy 5K run and One Mile Walk.
