A survey of bookshops selling school books in many parts of the city revealed that textbooks for many classes are not available. Sources said this year, syllabi of class 3rd and 7th standards have changed and hence books of these classes are yet to be made available in the bookstores.Interestingly, Balbharti had allowed mistakes to creep into the 10th class textbooks. However, when the education department came to know about this, it had alerted Balbharti to reprint the books, informed a source in the education department.Owners and sales staff in some of the shops selling schoolbooks said they are yet to get adequate stock from Balbharti, which is the book publishers, to whom the government had franchised the printing of textbooks. In a Sitabuldi shop, a shopkeeper pointed out that he had ordered for 20,000 copies of textbooks for various classes and was supplied only about 10,000. "Parents blame us for shortage of textbooks but the ones to be blamed are the government's publishers," he said.Many schools said there should be no real reason for shortage of textbooks because the syllabus has remained unchanged. Ritesh, a Std III student, said: "I'm not sure if I will get books before my school reopens on June 23."Says a worried parent, Sheela Gupte: "The practice of schools supplying textbooks directly to students should be reimplemented. Sadly, children get punished for not bringing textbooks."Shopkeepers also blamed that Balbharti is concentrating more on supplying books to government schools. From this academic year, all students from class I to Class VIII in government run schools would get textbooks free of cost.Says Vinod Nangia, owner of a bookshop in Sadar: "Though I have stock, I fear of shortage of stocks in near future."Sources in education department said that the Balbharti had distributed 85% of textbooks in government schools and remaining distribution would be completed soon.According to officials in Balbharti, there has been a delay in the printing of textbooks, "but soon most shops will be getting stocks and by early next week no student will be without books".
