One person who has seen the benefits of online learning is Aucklander Mike Bailey, who is taking several university courses without setting foot on campus. Photo / Richard RobinsonNew Zealand's largest university is about to give away its teaching free as the Government calls the tertiary sector together to discuss whether such an approach is the way forward.Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce will host the Innovations in Tertiary Education Delivery Summit next week, where the global education phenomenon of "Moocs" (massive open online courses) will take centre stage. The University of Auckland will use the event to launch its first Moocs, joining other New Zealand institutions. The courses generally take four to six weeks, have no entry requirements and are largely free. They enable someone sitting in their lounge in Auckland to take a course offered by a top university such as Harvard. The Government has issued a discussion paper that says modern technology could affect education as much as previous shifts including the invention of the printing press. From a learner's perspective, their potential is huge, offering largely free and on demand education that can be far more individualised than many university courses which are rising in cost each year. For governments, they give an opportunity to educate people without having to pay billions in subsidies and related support such as student loans. The benefits are less clear cut for tertiary institutions. Opportunities include showcasing areas of expertise and offering specialised "niche" courses. But there are big unknowns.Unlike other New Zealand universities, the University of Otago says it will not join the Moocs movement, partly because of concerns about viability and sustainability. The key question is whether institutions can make money through Moocs, or whether giving away expertise and content free will become self destructive. The Government's discussion paper notes the suggestion that the main rationale for institutions signing up is the "fear of missing out" in a rapidly growing area.IT worker says online courses let him upskill from homeFor Aucklander Mike Bailey the rise of "Moocs" (massive open online courses) represents a paradigm shift in education.Mr Bailey will shortly complete two courses offered by top United States universities, free and in his own time from his own home.He is also four weeks into an introduction to music production offered by the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts something he took out of personal interest. The programming course took him about 10 hours a week over nine weeks. Each week, a new group of videos was released to be viewed something like going to an old fashioned lecture.A couple of quizzes would also have to be completed, and assignments consisted of having to write computer programs and peer reviewing other students' work."You would go to a page and run their program, and then they would ask you, 'Does it display this at the top of the page, does it do this, does it do that?'"And you would select a pull down menu yes, it does; no, it doesn't. And if it didn't then you had to give reasons why not."Mr Bailey said he would not have time to attend a university short course. The Rice University course was the perfect way to upskill."I have been in the IT field for about 20 years now, and if there's one constant it is change. The day job is being the Entertainment Correspondent for Sky News. Which generally means loitering on red carpets, chewing the cud with music types and getting to go into posh hotels that would usually kick me out because someone famous is staying there. You should see how quickly the free shampoo and conditioner in the Dorchester disappear when a room full of journalists rocks up. Somewhere there's a reporter with beautiful soft hair. What would be your perfect London day? Get up, do LBC (why of course) try and go for a run round one of the parks so I don't feel guilty about the copious amounts of food and drink that would inevitably follow. Burrito with friends, or anyone really, at Wahaca in Covent Garden, a sly cocktail, a brief regret about eating the hot chilli sauce, cool off with a walk along the Thames and a glass of wine. Then I'd spend at least an hour staring at the vinyl in either Rough Trade or Sister Ray, buy a guitar from the vintage guitar shop in Denmark Street, take back the vintage guitar for a refund as I can't afford it or play it very well, then go for a nice cheap pint in town, before heading to a gig. If it's winter then it must be the Union Chapel because they serve mugs of tea and I'm getting old, otherwise I'm happy with either a seat upstairs at Shepherd's Bush, or KoKo. After that we'd probably walk round town wondering why no bars really seems to be open past midnight, and wishing we were important enough to be a member somewhere. Bliss. Tell us a secret about yourself. An accidental hobby of mine is getting in the back of tourists photos. I'm sure everyone knows what it's like if you pass through town trying to get to work, its almost unavoidable. We have an office at Westminster, so I always run the gauntlet of Big Ben snappers on my way in. I'm not saying I do it on purpose, but I have started keeping score. My best tally was getting in ten photos in one pass. I see it as a very slow way of gaining international fame and wealth. Somewhere in Belgium there's probably a family looking at their photos wondering who that strange looking guy is. Maybe I should start wearing a Steve Allen Show t shirt or something and charge LBC for advertising. Men Nike Free Run 3 Cool Grey Silver Sail University Red,How do you organize your home without spending too much? Getting organized shouldn't be complicated. Actually, the more complicated your organizational system, the less likely it is that you'll be able to maintain it. There's some excellent products you can buy to help organize your possessions. Just be careful that you're not just organizing clutter. You want to keep it pared down. Also, resist the temptation to buy organizing products until you know exactly what you need to contain. 1. In the beginning, the easiest and cheapest way to organize your belongings is to use containers. Keep like items together in separate containers. This makes it easier to find what you're looking for, even if you never get around to organizing the contents of the container. Another good reason to "containerize" belongings is that there's a limit to the amount of stuff any one container can hold, which puts a limit on the amount clutter. 2. Group items together in whatever way makes sense to you. In your closet, clothes can be sorted by color or type (shirts, pants, dresses, skirts, and suits) and hung accordingly in these categories. 3. Think vertical when maximizing your existing storage space. Think about what you might be able to hang behind closed doors, on the wall, and from the ceiling. For example, a shoe rack hung over the back of a door takes up less space than a standing shoe rack. Try to buy same sized storage boxes. This way, you can stack them on shelves to make use of unused space at the top of closets. 4. Designate temporary storage areas for the following items. Things that you plan to sell at a future garage sale, gifts purchased in advance of the occasion, clothing to go to the dry cleaner and library books and rented videos that must be returned. Store a marker and stickers with your garage sale items so that you can price them as you put them into storage. 5. Try not to just toss things into storage. Instead what you can do is keep an open catch all box in your storage area for catching all those things you find throughout the year that belong in a packed box. Then the next time you pull out all the boxes, you can put away everything in the catch all box away at the same time. Organizing your home puts you in control of your belongings by systematizing and putting your things in order. While there are some basic guidelines for getting organized, only you can figure out what works best for you. If it works well enough for you to keep it up, it's a good system!
Do You Want Buy Men Nike Free Run 3 Cool Grey Silver Sail University Red,Women Nike Free Run 3 Light Bone Vivid Orange My SIL is going to be getting married sometime in the not too distant future, which means I need new temple attire. I haven't been since before I had my son, and none of my old stuff fits anymore. My biggest problem is footwear. I have really wide feet, and none of what you can buy at the distribution center or rent in the temple will fit me. I made myself a pair of slippers once upon a time, but they don't fit either since pregnancy did a number on my already huge feet, and I really don't want to have to make a new pair. So, I've been looking at (extra wide) white shoes online, and I'm wondering, what parts of the shoe have to be white? Is it just the outer part? Or the sole and footbed too? I seem to recall seeing a temple worker or two wearing white shoes with natural/tan colored soles, but I'm not sure. I was hoping someone here could offer a little insight so I know what my options are. Well, before my feet went crazy when I was pregnant, I could actually sometimes find wide width shoes that (kind of) fit me at Payless Shoes. Those days are over now, unfortunately. Right now the only pair of shoes I have that actually fit are mens' Chaco sandals. The footbed is a little bit too narrow, but the straps are adjustable, so they work. I wear them year round. Aside from those, I wear $5 foam flip flops. My feet spill off the sides, but at least they don't hurt! I do love a good surfing challenge. OK, I'm not LDS, so I'm assuming that the shoes have to be white, not off white, bone beige, etc. right? If not, that opens up a lot more options. And, I'm assuming that we're not talking about strappy open toed sandal type dressy shoes but rather more along the lines of a closed toe pump? Again, there are lots more options if those are in the mix too. I found these, yes, a bit frumpy, but meet what I think the standards would be and in the super wide sizes These also come in a 3X wide and might be worth trying on to see if they do in fact fitOh, and see how it pays to surf one more page? How about these?. Men Nike Free Run 3 Cool Grey Silver Sail University Red Louis Vuitton shoes are one of the most popular shoes companies all over the world.
