I like to take lots and lots of numbers and turn them into proprietary concepts and multi platform content. Three of my longstanding publishing creations: the valuations of sports teams, ranking actors and movie studios on bang for the buck (ROI) and the Forbes Fab 40 (the most valuable sports brands). My most recent idea was Names You Need To Know, which broadened my concept of list creation to include direct input from our audience. I also like to take apart corporate balance sheets to measure earnings quality and have a passion for economics (my MBA thesis at Long Island University was an empirical study on the cause of inflation in which regression analysis showed a significant correlation between the general level of prices and the money supply). Besides being an Executive Editor at Forbes I also have a gig as co host and Managing Editor of the 3 time New York Emmy award winning Forbes SportsMoney on the YES Network with my buddies, co host Bob Lorenz and producer David Alfreds, both of whom have taught me a tremendous amount. My brother in arms is Kurt Badenhausen, whom I have worked with for many years and knows more about sports numbers than anyone. It should not be a big surprise that Nike has said it is sticking by embattled Penn State University and its former football coach Joe Paterno. The athletic apparel maker doesn't cut and run when one of its clients get into trouble, and the strategy has paid off for the world's most valuable sports brand. After Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant got a heap of bad publicity in 2003 when he was accused of sexual assault, McDonald's decided against extending their sponsorship deal with him. But Nike stuck with Bryant. The chargers were subsequently dropped and Nike extended their deal with him in 2007. As Bryant's image rebounded and the Lakers won the NBA championship in 2009 and 2010, you'd have to say Nike's decision paid off. Accenture and AT dumped Tiger Woods when he double bogeyed his marriage. Nike hung with Woods, who has been dismal on the links the past couple of years. Although Woods is not even ranked among the top 50 golfers in the world, he still generates big television ratings and is by far the most prominent economic force in golf. And the current leader in the Australian Open may still come back from his injuries with some great golf. Nike was right about Bryant. Is right about Woods. And will eventually be proven right with its decision to stick with Penn State. Nike has not become the world's top sports brand by accident. I have to agree with Clare here. As Buzz Bissinger put it at the Daily Beast, "A former Penn State assistant coach for 29 years and alleged sexual predator, Jerry Sandusky, apparently continued unchecked because of the failure of university officials and head football coach deity Joe Paterno to do anything that might have made a difference instead of what they collectively did achieve: Buck passing and unconscionable cowardice." And we are talking here about nothing less than serial child rape, of which evidence was brought to Paterno's attention and he caused nothing to be done. Any responsible or even sensible business should be running away from that absolutely as fast as possible. Indeed, Penn State knew for years about the allegations yet did nothing, everyone up the chain of command avoided contacting the police and thus allowed Sandusky to continue raping children. Whether convicted or not, the point is that there were repeated allegations of child rape, and nothing was done to keep him away from kids or to bring the police into the matter, not even the university's own security police were informed after a child was seen being raped in a shower. There is no question as to the university's failure to take action after the allegations it's a demonstrable fact that nothing was done until parents went to police about the assaults, and that the university meanwhile knew about the witnesses and allegations and did nothing. Any business that decides to maintain a working relationship with the institution, knowing the institution was aware of allegations of child rape for years but took no action, is making not only a terrible business choice, but an indefensible and horrible moral choice as well. "The financial impact on the school would be devastating and lots of innocent students would suffer" I urge you to step back. Your last two posts on this are bordering on the offensive. Did you read the Grand Jury indictment? Let me tell you what happened hereA ten year old underprivileged boy was sodomized in the football building at Penn State. Think that little guy may have cried out for God to help him? We find out that there was somebody there who could have and should have rescued him. How did Penn State handle it? They covered it up most likely BECAUSE of the financial impact thereby freeing up a man to possibly assault dozens of other young boys. To whom should our sympathies go Mark? Who truly are the "innocent" victims here? After the NBA finals you wrote about a statement made by Lebron James in which many of your readers castigated you because we felt that you'd missed the point of his words but you insisted that James' sponsors would feel the heat. Now in a situation far more egregious you tell us that Nike "will eventually be proven right with its decision to stick with Penn State" To do so tells me a lot about what this society has become. To defend them says a lot about their defenders. Expect more from Forbes. If the charges are true, Sandusky was a monster who stalked his prey under the shadow of darkness. No one knew. In 2008, ESPN sent a reporter to State College for a month to dig up dirt on Paterno for a hit piece they ran that year. They emailed every faculty member and many people in town. Do you think they wouldn't have salivated over this if they got even an anonymous whiff? No one knew. No one suspected. Only McQueary and we don't know what he told Paterno. I've made many lenses about our dog Mukunda who passed away this year. Naturally, Ulysses was apart of those lenses, but the focus was always on the top dog, Mukunda! After Mukunda's passing, Ulysses took a few weeks to regroup to become the dog he is today. He did not know how to beg for food or to even tell us that he was hungry. When we feed him, he seems to look over his shoulder to ask Muki if it's OK if he eats. In comparison to Mukunda, he is a quiet dog, unassuming but also has a powerful presence. Hanging out with Ulysses brings a new dimension to the moment. A Loving Dimension! Love Of Dog: 1960's And 70's Baby Boomer Commune Stories On Amazon My Latest Prayer Prescription Book! The Prayer Prescription Series evolved organically since its inception in November 2008, when I started writing 365 prayers, one prayer a day, on a community blog created by a fellow Squidoo member. Yet writing prayers may have given people the wrong impression of me. Prayers are a spiritual practice, often the cornerstone of religion. People may also feel that prayer is somehow in the domain of the Christian Church yet prayer is universal to all religions and spiritual traditions, too. My ninth Prayer Prescription book was published, in part, to show the world that I am anything but Miss Goody Two Shoes, as writing prayers might suggest. Love Of Dog is a prime example of Prayer Comes In Many Forms. The stories revolve around my wild youth living on communes from 1969 to 1974, culminating in a local redneck neighbor shooting all eight of my dogs because he hated hippies. The dogs were our guardian angels. And still are. Instead of going out after him for animal cruelty, we all caved, wept, mourned and went our separate ways. Today is high summer in this part of the world. Last evening, we took Ulysses to the riffle. Next time, I'll take the camera and take a video of the magnificence. It is peaceful there and everywhere on the river and riffle itself. The river used to be brown and muddy but since all of the dams are gone for the last 15 years, the river is clear, finally, and the bottom is gravely. The sunlight coming off the river, gracing quickly over the rocks, immediately put Ulysses in a zone which he maintained for the rest of the day. I felt the zone right along with Ulysses. The loud snorts of the white tailed deer, the soaring osprey and the baby ducklings swimming away at rapid speed is precious and rare, experienced all in one trip. Ulysses Heals The Waterways After The BP Oil Spill The Riffle!! The Riffle Is An Unofficial Archeological Site! The eternal now is ever present on the timeless river. The light upon the riffle always differs with rainbow colors springing from every rock. The riffle is also an unofficial archeological site. Last evening we found a part of a buggy circa 1800's. I can't say if it was an Amish Buggy but chances are, it is or was. We think we can use the front of it to dock and secure the canoe. The riffle is a place where shells and unusual rocks settle as well as Indian Artifacts, all since a total of three dams were removed. Skinning tools, arrow heads and hand made knives rest there. The true consciousness of approaching a site with Indian artifacts is to allow all of it to remain exactly as you find it. Let them rest where they are even as the river carries them away in a storm or a flood. Nothing remains in the same place, always moving, dancing, carried by the flow of the current. Ulysses Continues To Help Heal The Waterways! The Healing Journey Dear God/ess, We almost put Ulysses down over the weekend, but he perked up after I came home from work from a long 16 hour shift. Car tires have different fillers that give them dramatically higher wear rates than the rubbers used in shoes. This also tends to make them less flexible and can make them harder. Other fillers like silicon are added to further increase the properties of the tire. Typically, the flexibility of the sidewall is what gives car tires their "apparent" flexibility. This same type of design isn modeled in footware. There are hundreds of different base rubber gums and filler combinations. Some are extraordinarily expensive, and they all have different properties. I bet a properly designed shoe with the right filler combination could be very comfortable without sacrificing the wear rate of the rubber.
Where Can i Find Authentic Men Nike Free Run 2 Red White Black,Roshe Run PRM Women Peppermint Candy Sail Winter running is not my favorite thing. Here is why. My body does not like the cold. A few years ago I experienced a very nasty viral infection that turned in to a full blown cough that lasted for a month. I thought I had exercise induced asthma. I went through the full gamut of tests but the results were inconclusive. One thing became apparent; every time I catch a respiratory virus, breathing in cold air only exacerbates the problem. A few times it has even landed me in the hospital with serious breathing problems. As a result, I am cautious about running outside in the winter. Running in the cold is very taxing. Running one mile is like three. Your lungs have to work harder. Sometimes it can even leave you feeling short of breath. Now that I am training for the BMO Vancouver Marathon, I have been running outside. But I am careful to not overtax my system or run too fast. I have also noticed running in the cold seems to lead to pain and stiffness in the knees and joints. Apparently, a person's blood flows slower in the cold, making it harder to move our muscles. Studies have also shown cold weather can lead to a worsening in arthritic symptoms. In addition, a moist and rainy climate such as Vancouver can cause joints to swell. This swelling can lead to greater joint stiffness. A 2007 study at Tufts University actually revealed that every 10 degree drop in temperature corresponded with an incremental increase in arthritis pain. Increasing barometric pressure was also a pain trigger in the Tufts study. Other studies in medical cadavers have shown that barometric pressure affects the pressure inside our joints. So if you are finding it difficult to run through these cold winter days, you are not alone. Here are some tips to help get us through it together. Layer up. Always wear a hat and gloves and moisture wicked layers. We lose most of our body heat through our head, hands and feet. If you find inhaling cold air is irritating your airways, wear a scarf or balaclava. Another trick: Double up on your socks. I love wearing wool running socks because they tend to be warmer and keep my feet drier than cotton. Try a wool running sock such as Thorlos or SmartWool. Don overdress. Too many layers and you may get over heated, even running in the cold. I usually wear a base layer and top it off with a fleece lined running shirt. Some fabrics used in running clothes also seem to capture and hold the sweat more. My personal favorite is anything Dri Fit by Nike. Breathe through your nose. I struggle with this myself. Breathing through your mouth usually leads to a mucous build up in your throat, which can lead to difficulty breathing. Start off your run slow. It typically takes me five kilometres to warm up my body and muscles before I can pick up the speed. Allow your body to warm up first by easing into your run at a slower pace for the first few kilometres. Once your muscles are warmed up, feel free to pick up the pace. Drink warm water. Just because it is winter doesn mean you should not be drinking on your runs. Without water, you can run the risk of dehydration. Instead of filling up your water bottle with cold water, opt for warm or room temperature water. Add lemon and some honey. Stretch. Make sure to limber up your joints and muscles by stretching after each run. Stretching cold, tight muscles pre run can lead to muscles strains, tears or injuries. Warm up first. Run. Stretch after. Better yet, take a yoga class to stretch tired muscles. You will also increase your range of flexibility. The addition of yoga to any fitness regime has been well documented and is chalked full of positive benefits. Yoga also teaches us how to breathe properly. Take glucosamine. Glucosamine and chondroitin are part of natural cartilage which acts as a cushion between the bones in the joint. Glucosamine is a natural substance found in the covering of shellfish according to WebMD. It is usually taken as a supplement in powder, tablet, capsule or liquid form to aid in joint deterioration in osteoarthritis. Analysis has not shown either glucosamine or chondroitin to slow joint destruction or ease pain. However, some people believe it does. I take glucosamine and have heard from other endurance athletes that is seems to strengthen their joints and ease joint stiffness. If you have an allergy to seafood don take it. Pack a change of clothes. As soon as you stop running, your body begins to cool down immediately. You can get cold really quickly by staying in your sweat soaked running clothes and even risk catching hypothermia. Change immediately into dry clothes after your run. If you are going on a destination run, pack a change of dry clothes with you. Heating pads and hot baths. When joint stiffness seems to flare up from a hard workout or cold weather run, I break out my heating pad or take a hot bath. Ice is always a first however when treating inflammation of the muscle. Wear sunglasses. On sunny days wear polarized sunglasses for the best protection. The glare of the sun off the snow can actually cause snow blindness. Run in to the wind. On windy days make sure you run into the wind at the start of your run after you have broken a sweat and finish with it at your back advises Runner Worldmagazine. Grab a coffee. The best part of any winter run is grabbing a coffee after you are finished. It will warm up your insides. Men Nike Free Run 2 Red White Black I'm a reluctant hero, an inventor, sort of. With all due respect to Rube Goldberg and Al Gore, it wasn't easy. I learned that you can't coax, threaten or push a wild bird into a box or bag, not from the bushes and not from your fireplace. So I built a better mouse, ah, bird trap. We have a killer fireplace. I mean a "Killer" fireplace, as in O. J. and Lizzie Borden a dead and not moving anymore kind of killer. After being away two weeks, I stared at a lifeless feathered lump in our damp firebox. An unexpected torrent had washed it down as it "peeped" down into the big stovepipe. A second bird clung to the inside edge and managed to peep for another day. Fifteen years ago, we wanted an old fashioned fireplace; one made by hand with bricks lying end to end and side to side, held together by mortar and still standing after the house fell in. The kind you cover with extra chicken wire to keep the birds out and remove when Santa comes to town. The builder couldn't stop laughing. "That's so yesterday. The modern ones made of recycled Tuna Fish cans and Foil Wrap pull the smoke out better and don't cost a fortune. The top is capped so that birds, squirrels and stray aardvarks can't set up an RFD in your chimney. No more birds for you, no sir ee. Sir, how many days do you use a fireplace in a central Texas winter, four? Ha ha ha!" That was about eight birds ago. I left the damper open while we were away. But if you're listening PETA and bird lovers everywhere, it was the first and only casualty at our address. Heretofore SB and me, sole human inhabitants, made fools of our respective selves getting the birds out of the house alive. Our method eventually worked though the emotional trauma to us, the bird, and neighbors was severe. Here's our last embarrassing "help the birdies" morning escape caper. The only thing missing was Steve McQueen. Still dressed in jammies, bleary eyed, reeking from morning mouth and IED hair, we opened both our front and back doors providing an escape alley for the bird and a panoramic neighborhood view to the upcoming spectacle. All interior doors were shut. Armed with a mop and broom we readied ourselves and opened the fireplace glass doors. All Hades broke loose as we chased the terrified bird from corner to corner of the house "shooing" toward an open door, dodging furniture and clutter like marbles in a pinball machine. Finally done and without a shred of self esteem or breath, we peeked into the yard to see if any human being had died from laughter. My long time lover and best friend, suggested both relationships were tenuous should I not find a more civil and discreet way to free the frightened, frenetic, foul fowl from the fireplace. And suggested I stop using words beginning with "F" as it wasn't funny. She declared that anything done with open doors and a broom would show up in print, divorce papers or both. I quietly said "phooey." My small animal trap was nowhere to be found. So I removed a shoe box from her closet and cut a round hole (with flap) for bird ingress and egress, and a few slits on top for light to enter. I filled a small dish with thistle seeds and placed it in the shoe box inside the fireplace and waited for the bird to have a spot of lunch. Two hours later the bird had eaten its way to a nap (as had I) in its cozy new nest. SB picked up the shoe box, closed the door flap and took it to the deck. She removed the top of the box and watched as the bird debated if it wanted to give up its posh new surroundings. Within seconds it retreated to the harsh realities of Mother Nature, digging for worms, sparring with "hummers" and shaking off mites. The neighbors never knew. Shortly thereafter my sweetie smiled and left to buy a new pair of shoes, "In case we ever need another shoe box." "Of course," I said with a grimace. Photo of bird trap available upon request.
