There's an infamous line in the movie Sandlot: "You play ball like a GIRL!" that most definitely got laughs out of us as kids, myself included. But now that I have kids of my own I have to think about what kind of a message that phrase sends to my children. If you were to demonstrate running like a girl, how would you do it? How would your child respond if you asked him or her to act it out? As adults we've been raised surrounded by stereotypes and made to believe things that aren't necessarily true. A new ad by Always sets out to show us how our words have a serious effect on our children, and asks us when doing things "like a girl" became an insult. In the video someone off camera asks older girls and boys to show them how to run like a girl, throw like a girl, and hit like a girl. One after another the people on camera prance around and act silly on camera, as if girls can't do those things. They then ask the same questions to younger girls who act in completely different ways. I love the look on the little girls' faces as they run as fast as they can and punch the air as hard as they can. Watching this ad really struck me because I have a daughter and a son, and I want them both to respect girls and understand that girls and women aren't inferior to boys and men. For fun I asked our four year old daughter to do some of these things to see how she'd react and she took off running as fast a she could. To run like a girl is to run like herself. To punch like a girl is to punch like herself. I want to encourage my daughter to continue to be herself, and do her best. I want the phrase "like a girl" to be a compliment to her, and other girls around her, and someday, kids will be watching Sandlot, watch that popular scene and wonder what in the world that even means.
