Really, there is no reason to be intimidated when trying to design an applique that seems impossible. It took me a day of contimplating whether I really wanted to try to do this, but I finally convinced myself to attempt to create this high top converse sneeker applique. (And I'm sure glad I did!) I was really nervious to start this project because I had no idea how I was going to do it. But my creativity prevailed!The steps for this applique are similar to the applique on the previous step, so you will definitely be able to execute this.Pin the cut out shoe shapes to the desired fabrics, and cut them out.Peel the waxy paper off the back of the cutout and arrange the design on the RIGHT side of one of the 17" x 11" fabric cuts.Remember, this will be the outside, front cover of the notebook cover. It may be helpful to fold the larger piece of fabric in half so you can see the amount of area you have to work with. The applique and pocket should be located on the right side of the large fabric cut.Once you decide the position of the applique, making sure to take seam allowances into account, iron the applique onto the RIGHT side of the fabric.The next part is where this applique differs a little from the last one. Instead of hand stitching small stitches all the way around the edges of the design, this time you are going to be more creative and use hand embroidary to add the details of a Converse shoe. Use different colors of embroidary thread to create the laces, the black rubber sole lines, and any other small stitching shown on the orginal Converse picture. Paint and stencil the seaman's chest for a tropical flare or leave it natural to show off its aged patina. Search for a seaman's chest at antique malls, yard sales and thrift stores. Tame the mess on a porch by storing coats and shoes out of sight in a beautiful armoire. Once used strictly for clothing, armoires now function as computer cabinets, entertainment centers and even as kitchen storage units. Armoires are designed to suit many styles. Materials used for crafting armoires range from wood to metal, with wood being the more common material. Armoires generally have two doors that open to reveal drawers, shelves and even rods to accommodate clothing. Fine furniture stores, department stores, building supply centers and antiques dealers carry armoires. Recycling wooden chicken nesting boxes for shoe storage adds charm and function to a farmhouse porch. Built as individual nests, or in groups of two, four, six or more, chicken nesting boxes come in two basic styles: open and enclosed. Open nesting boxes have no doors and make egg gathering fast and easy. Enclosed nesting boxes have hinged doors that must be opened to collect the eggs. Enclosed nesting boxes would work well to protect shoes from the elements on an exposed porch. Stack individual chicken nesting boxes near the home entrance at the porch and arrange shoes inside the boxes. Use one of the nesting boxes to keep gloves and hats within easy reach. Choose any style of shoe you like, but make sure you stick to plastic or leather. Glue doesn't stick to fabric easily and the comic book clippings won't lay perfectly flat on a woven surface. Decide on a comic book to use. I chose a crappy one that was 25 at the used book store because I didn't want to destroy a really good one, but don't feel bound by MY constraints! Try using one with your favorite superhero, one with lots of great action shots and KAPOWs, or just one with an art style you love. Get some crafting glue and clear acrylic spray. I used Mod Podge (about $6 9) and Aervoe Clear Acrylic (about $5 8), but get whatever brands you prefer. Clear acrylic comes in different finishes, so choose a glossy or flat finish according to how shiny you want your finished product to look. Once you've got your materials together, identify pictures from the comic book you want to use on your heels and clip them out. You can lay out the entire shoe design before you start gluing or clip and glue as you go (I did the latter). Use a small paint brush to brush a thin layer of craft glue on the back of each clipping. Don't use too much glue or the clipping may wrinkle when you set it in place, but be sure the entire back is covered evenly. Press the glue covered clipping firmly in place on your shoe. Be sure the corners of the clipping aren't sticking up. Keep going until both shoes are fully covered in comic book clippings. Allow the glue to dry over night. Stuff your shoes with tissue paper or newspaper to prevent the clear acrylic from getting on the inside. Find a well ventilated area to spray down your shoes with clear acrylic. I opened the garage door and sprayed mine in the garage. Make sure you wear a paint mask or other form of breathing protection to keep from inhaling any acrylic. Use 2 4 coats of acrylic spray, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next (see the instructions on your particular brand of spray for more detailed directions).
